Thanks to Margaret in Australia, who has sent me photos and certificates awarded to her mother, Edith COE (born 21st January 1908) while at Arnot St. Edith’s 2 sisters were  Margaret born 1906 and Lily born 1910. Margaret was twin to the only boy in the family - Frederick William.

Their parents were Frederick William and Margaret Manning COE. Frederick senior was originally from Norwich, Norfolk. His Grandfather Edward COE was married to Elizabeth HOVELL, whose father, John HOVELL was the brother of Captain William Hilton HOVELL, an explorer of Australia. He and another explorer, Hamilton HUME opened up the area from Canberra to Melbourne in the early 1800s.

Dianne HUGHES, also in Australia, sent me certificates and photos for her father Arthur JOHNSON (b1906) and uncle Harry JOHNSON (b1901)at Arnot St and Fonthill Rd schools.

Other photos courtesy of Liverpool Record Office / Mersey Gateway. BBC links.

Below - certificate for Arthur JOHNSON, dated 1912. Arthur was born 1906, so he was only 6 at the time! Thanks to Dianne HUGHES, Arthur’s daughter. He might even have been in the same class as Margaret COE - I’ll have to check out the records sometime soon.

I think this is the happiest school group I have ever seen! Edith is fourth from the right on the front row in this 1914 group

Thanks to Edith and to Margaret for saving these photos and certificates for all these years - I hope you enjoy them too.

Edith married William James Fletcher (born Rock Ferry in 1902) on Primrose day April 1930. They had 4 children including Margaret. One of the older boys, William James, died when only 9 months old from that scourge of young children - Dyptheria. Margaret attended Arnot St school for a time during the war when Edith went to do war work in Capenhurst factory and the children went to stay with Nan and Grandad COE in Index St.
