Brae St

The school was renamed - I think - Edge Hill, sometime after the 1950s (to judge by the photo below, supplied by Marged) and later amalgamated with Clint Rd to form Kensington Primary School. The first Heads of the new schools in 1973 were Mrs J M MURPHY (Juniors) and Miss M NEAL (Infants). The old school was recently demolished.   The new building opened in 2003 or thereabouts,  housing both Infant and Junior schools.

The school was opened in August 1888. It was a mixed school with an Infants’ Department - average attendance in 1911 was 1,500 children. There was also a Manual Instruction Centre, Wood and Metalworkk, Clay Modelling and Machine Drawing, which opened after enlargements in the 1890.  The photo below was taken about 1923; Barbara’s mother Evelyn MURCH is sixth from the right on the next to back row.
